Breaking the Chain of Low Self-Esteem
Marilyn Sorensen
Dr. Sorensen's book makes the argument that LSE is the core issue to the problems that individuals experience such as, depression, anger, worthlessness, etc. We have LSE because we have distorted and irrational thoughts. Her basic principles make sense and seem to be very accurate. However, that is where the positives end. Like other's have said more than half the book discusses examples of a person who has LSE, not much is discussed regarding recovery. Next, she claims that all therapists (unless trained by her) cannot help people with LSE or other behavioral problems. For example, if someone is addicted to alcohol unless they go through her treatment and tackle LSE they will not recover. However, we know thousands of people that utilize AA to overcome their behavioral addiction. I have emailed her back and forth several times regarding whether or not spirituality plays a role and dismissed me immediately. Just to let all of you know she admitted that her background is in youth ministries and that the founding principles of her book come from 1st corinthians chapter 13, yet she does not extrapolate the majority of this information in her book. If you would like to see the emails she sent me id be more than happy for your to see her responses.
