Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral condition that typically manifests in young children. The cardinal symptoms of the disorder are inattention, impulsivity. and hyperactivity, traits that make learning and concentration difficult for children with ADHD. The disorder has been recosnized as a serious medical and behavioral condition since Georae Still's series of lectures to the Royal College of Physicians in 1902 (1). ADHD is the most common neurobehavioral problem in school-age children, with current prevalence at 3-5%. and is 4-9 times more common in males than females (2). For diagnostic purposes, the disorder is separated into three classes depending on whether it mainly involves inattentiveness. hyperactivity/impulsivity. or both. Associated symptoms of ADHD include emotional lability and a resistance to conditioning whereby poor behavior is repeated despite punishment, making these children very difficult to discipline.
